Eager, Lively, Cozy...Penguins!

We have been learning about penguins this week...along with everyone else in the school. Really, you should see our hallway!  I guess we ALL love those cute little birds!  One of my kiddos is so in love with penguins and everyone else in the class has joined her now! :)

Yesterday I read the book Playful Little Penguins by Tony Mitton. The first graders had to listen for 3 "fancy words" (part of our Robust Vocabulary instruction). The words were: eager, lively and cozy. After reading the story we talked about those words and what they meant. We thought about times were have been eager, lively and cozy. Today when we went to the computer lab the kids wrote a post on their Kidblog using one or more of the words. You can go HERE to read their posts. They'd love it if you left them a comment, too! :)

We read this book together on our Promethean board. It's super cute, easy to read, has rhyming and is a great way to practice fluency and expression!! You can go HERE to view it.

We made these cuties yesterday. I found the idea on Pinterest...I'm so addicted to it!! It's a good thing though! :)  (Here's the website they were on: http://marymaking.blogspot.com/2009/12/construction-paper-penguins.html)

Besides those fiction stories, we have been reading some non-fiction books to answer questions we have about penguins and to learn new facts, too.

Here's another Pinterest-inspired idea that I found at Fun-In-First.blogspot.com. The kiddos wrote their answers to the questions on post-it notes and then we read Cool Penguins to find out if our answers were correct.
We will continue our study of penguins tomorrow and will write down some of the information that we have learned. We're hoping to share some of that information with our Skype friends in Canada, Texas and Vermont.

That's all for now. Between the full moon (CRAZY, LIVELY kiddos!!),  the warm weather (and some snow forecast for tonight??), and end of the semester/quarter assessments you should see my desk...back to work! ;)

  1. Oh Laurie,
I so love your blog's new look! It is so fresh looking. Wow! You have been busy with your penguin unit. I don't know either penguin book. I'll have to check out my library to see if we have them. I happen to read Tacky the Penguin today. I just love how cute penguins are.
Thanks for sharing all your great ideas.
